04: Finding the Language with Leanne Tory-Murphy

Social Practice CUNY Season 1 Episode 4

This episode of Part of the Practice finds us in conversation with 2023-24 SPCUNY Actionist and recent Brooklyn College poetry MFA graduate Leanne Tory-Murphy. We talk about Leanne's movement from journalistic writing to more creative writing, about the importance of sometimes separating our social movement work from our creative practice, and we also have a really powerful and heartfelt conversation about becoming more embodied in our art practice.

About our guest:

Leanne Tory-Murphy is a trade unionist, organizer, and writer who has worked across the fields of labor and migration for more than two decades. She was a Fulbright grantee in Italy, a recipient of the Tow Grant for International Research in Chile, and is a recent graduate of the MFA in Poetry at Brooklyn College. Her manuscript, ‘Sea Above,’ draws from the work of Chilean poet Raul Zurita and other artists working under the Pinochet dictatorship. As a Social Practice CUNY fellow, Leanne began to develop ‘A Future Language,’ a poetic practice that draws on both the history of walking pilgrimages and performance art to address personal and collective trauma, grief and history. Her work has appeared in The Brooklyn Rail, Le Monde Diplomatique, VICE, Jacket2, Jacobin and other publications.
